Flying is a great solution for most travelers, mainly due to the speed of connections. However, with the significant popularity of “low-cost” flights nowadays, comfort is often compromised. There are two airports in Tenerife. In the south of the island, we have Tenerife South Airport, also known as Reina Sofia Airport, and in the north, we have Tenerife North Airport (formerly known as Los Rodeos). The southern airport mostly handles international flights, while the northern airport primarily serves domestic flights within Spain and inter-island connections. Flight redirections between airports do occur, mainly due to weather conditions. Tenerife South Airport (TFS) – Reina Sofia
Reina Sofia South Airport is the main airport in Tenerife. It is located between the town of El Médano and the popular tourist resort of Golf del Sur. It is only 60 km away from the island’s capital, Santa Cruz. Just before landing, you can admire the beautiful natural beach of La Tejita and the characteristic Red Mountain (Montaña Roja) located near El Médano from a bird’s-eye view. The southern airport in Tenerife was opened in October 1978 as the second airport on the island. It has a single asphalt concrete runway with a length of 3,200 meters and a width of 45 meters. In terms of tourist traffic, it is the second busiest airport in the Canary Islands archipelago (after the one on Gran Canaria). Before the pandemic, it welcomed over 11 million visitors annually.
Tenerife North Airport (TFN) – Tenerife Norte Ciudad de La Laguna
Tenerife North Airport is located near the university town of La Laguna, about 10 km from the island’s capital, Santa Cruz. It can be reached via the TF-5 highway. It was opened in January 1941 and until 1977, it was the only airport on the island. In that year, a very serious collision occurred here, involving two Boeing 747 aircraft, resulting in one of the deadliest accidents in aviation history. Currently, Tenerife North Airport primarily serves connections with mainland Spain and inter-island flights within the archipelago. It is common to see small Binter Canarias planes here, facilitating communication between the islands. Over 4 million travelers use this airport each year. It is currently the fifth busiest airport in terms of tourist traffic in the Canary Islands.
