description

La Gomera by Bus

The excursion to La Gomera by bus takes place from Monday to Sunday in several popular languages. It departs from both Puerto de la Cruz and the south of Tenerife. This day-long trip requires you to bring your ID card or passport (necessary for the ferry check-in). The coach arrives at the port in Los Cristianos, where passengers board the ferry to the neighboring island of La Gomera. Along the way, you can admire the beautiful view of Tenerife receding and La Gomera approaching. The ferry has a souvenir shop and several bars where you can purchase drinks and sandwiches. You are free to move around on the ferry. We advise those prone to seasickness to avoid the front of the ferry, as the waves are strongest there.

La Gomera is one of the smaller islands in the Canary Archipelago. It is several times smaller than Tenerife, with an area of only 370 km². However, unlike Tenerife, it is incredibly green, thanks to its history linked to the Spanish conquest of the islands. La Gomera is sometimes referred to as the Island of Columbus, the Island of Witches, and the Island of a Hundred Thousand Palms. It is undoubtedly a magical and mysterious island.

Huge green ravines, winding roads, narrow passes, cliffs, and the Garajonay National Park (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) are just the beginning of the adventure. It offers incredibly attractive views for nature lovers and pristine landscapes. There are no typical tourist resorts here, just tiny villages and towns. You will find numerous plantations of bananas, papayas, and avocados. For those seeking seclusion during their vacation, a holiday on La Gomera can be a very attractive option.

La Gomera by Bus – Whistling Language “Silbo”

During the day, a meal is planned at a local restaurant. During the restaurant stop, there is a demonstration of the unique whistling language called “Silbo,” which has been inscribed on UNESCO’s list of intangible cultural heritage. In the past, it was used for basic communication between goat herders on the steep mountain slopes.

This extraordinary language consists of only three vowels, two consonants, and, most importantly, intonation. It is fascinating to note that it can imitate any spoken language. It is truly remarkable to hear a whistled “good morning” or “welcome to La Gomera.” The trip to La Gomera is undoubtedly an unforgettable experience.

Garajonay National Park

One of the highlights of the excursion is a visit to the stunning Garajonay National Park, which houses 18 different types of laurel trees. In the center of the national park, there is a local shop where you can purchase typical products from La Gomera. These include Almogrote (a mature goat cheese blended with pepper in the form of a hard pâté), El Gomeron (local moonshine combined with palm honey), and La Mistela (local wine with spices). These products are hard to find on Tenerife, so it’s worth remembering to pick some up during the trip.

Another opportunity to buy souvenirs is during the visit to San Sebastian, the capital of the island. The town is linked to Christopher Columbus’s visits to the island. It is also home to the first church built on the island, dating back to the 15th century. In San Sebastian, you can also find four deep wells that are dry today. Interestingly, hundreds of years ago, they were filled with drinkable fresh water. It is essential to return to the ferry on time for the return journey, as the next ferry departs the following day.
